A couple looking out over the coast, planning their retirement together

About us

A family firm, in the proper sense of the word.

Fernleigh Wearden has been advising families and businesses across Lancashire since 1985. Two generations, one office and the same phone number people have been ringing for forty years.

Our story

Forty years, two generations, one motto.

Fernleigh Wearden & Company Ltd started life as Fernleigh Wearden & Co, a partnership between Alison and Paul Wearden, in 1985.

It became a family financial advice company in the fullest sense in 2013, when Mark — Paul and Alison's younger son — joined as a fully qualified adviser after almost nine years in the insurance industry. In 2020 the partnership became a limited company. In 2023 Daniel, their older son, joined after a career spanning banking, sales and patents and innovation.

That same year, on the retirement of Yvonne Marsden, we agreed to take on the clients of Yvonne Marsden Financial Planning Services Ltd so that they could carry on receiving the standard of service they had come to expect. We welcomed them from August 2023 and we made them the same promise we make everyone.

Live life by planning well.

Our motto, since 1985

Paul Wearden, founder and financial adviser Founder

Paul Wearden

DipPFS · Diploma in Financial Planning · Pension Transfer Specialist

Paul has spent his entire working life in financial services. He started at Britannic Assurance in Preston in 1981, moved to Abacan, Smith & Patterson in central Preston in 1983 and became fully qualified in the years that followed — achieving what was then the highest accolade in the industry, Fellow of the Life Insurance Industry.

In 1985 he founded Fernleigh Wearden & Co, which became Fernleigh Wearden & Company Ltd in 2020. He is qualified to Diploma in Financial Planning level through the Personal Finance Society, advises across every area of financial planning and holds the pension transfer specialist qualification.

Paul originally held Fellowship of the Life Insurance Association, one of the highest qualifications available at the time. When the framework was reorganised decades later, holders were offered the diploma-level equivalent instead. The letters changed; the forty years of knowledge behind them did not.

That matters more than it sounds. Contracted-out benefits, State Second Pension, guaranteed annuity rates, plans written in the 1980s that no longer exist in any brochure — a younger adviser may never have seen one. Paul has advised on them since they were new.

Away from the office: Paul plays the piano and enjoys tennis, golf and squash. He is a passionate Preston North End supporter and takes every opportunity to get to Deepdale. Family matters a great deal to him — his three children Daniel, Mark and Lorna all now work for the firm he founded over forty years ago and he is a proud grandad to six grandchildren.

Credentials

Mark Wearden, Fellow of the Personal Finance Society Fellow of the PFS

Mark Wearden

Chartered Financial Planner · FPFS · Fellow of the Personal Finance Society

Mark joined the business in 2013, having begun his professional career at Friends Provident in 2004. His specialisms are pensions and financial planning for businesses.

He is the most qualified adviser in the firm and as a result he generally takes the more complex cases — convoluted pension arrangements, business planning, inheritance tax, and anything where the answer is not obvious at the first meeting. Where a situation needs that depth, it will usually be Mark you see.

He is a Pension Transfer Specialist, meaning he holds the qualifications and knowledge to give independent advice on all types of UK pension. He also holds the highest qualification awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute — Fellow of the Personal Finance Society — and continues to build on his qualifications to this day.

Away from the office: Mark enjoys playing a variety of sports, is a keen runner and a Preston North End season ticket holder along with his son. He has two children, Polly and Barney, who are also very sporty — so his evenings and weekends are often spent as a spectator of their activities, as well as a taxi service.

Behind the advice

The people who keep it all running.

Advice is the visible part. Getting it to you on time, accurately and without fuss — and being findable in the first place — is everything else.

Alison Wearden, co-founder and office administrator Co-founder

Alison Wearden

Co-founder & Office Administrator

Alison has been an integral part of the family firm since Paul first set up the business in 1985, supporting all areas of administration and keeping the office running smoothly. She also helps with all the important lifestyle administration, making sure the team stays hydrated, well fed and happy at work.

Away from the office: Alison is a wonderful Nanna to her six gorgeous grandchildren, who keep her very hands-on and busy. She enjoys walking, playing tennis and spending quality time with her mum on days out.
Lorna Harding, office manager Office Manager

Lorna Harding

Office Manager

Lorna joined the family firm in 2025, following a 20-year career in the healthcare industry where she held a variety of roles including carrying out healthcare assessments, delivering regional training, managing departments and supporting governance teams with audits, compliance and complaints.

She joined the family business to support the administration and day-to-day running of the firm and is now an integral part of the team as Office Manager. Lorna particularly enjoys the people-focused side of her role. She is passionate about making financial planning feel approachable and easy to understand, taking what can sometimes seem like complicated jargon and explaining it in a warm, friendly and straightforward way.

Away from the office: Lorna remains active and swims and walks regularly. She enjoys spending time with her husband Mike and their two daughters, Harlee and Georgie, and they are always out with friends and family. She works mainly from home in Manchester, which gives her a good balance between family life and her role in the business.
Neil Dombrowski, compliance, audit and risk officer Compliance

Neil Dombrowski

Compliance, Audit & Risk Officer

Neil joined the firm in 2026, bringing extensive compliance experience from his previous roles at Carphone Warehouse and the Communications Ombudsman. He looks after our compliance and risk management, ensuring the firm meets all financial regulations and internal standards.

Through regular internal audits and proactive risk management, Neil protects the business and helps us build long-term trust with our clients. A great many firms our size outsource this entirely, so having it in-house means problems are found here rather than further down the line.

Away from the office: Neil is a keen sports fan who enjoys both playing and watching, especially following his favourite teams at the weekend. When he is not involved in sport he loves spending his free time on family days out.
Shaun Whitehill, digital partner Digital partner

Shaun Whitehill

Digital Partner · Whiteski Digital

We understand the value of being findable and useful online and Shaun plays a big part in that. He looks after the website, our search visibility and the articles we publish, working remotely alongside the team.

Away from the desk: an ex-amateur footballer and, by his own admission, a now terrible golfer.

We thoroughly recommend Shaun to anyone looking for website support.

What this means for you

Being small is the advantage, not the apology.

I

Continuity, wherever possible

We will always endeavour to keep you with the adviser you first met. Where holiday or illness gets in the way, whoever picks up will already be familiar with your file — so you are not starting again.

II

Qualifications you can check

Between Paul, Mark and Daniel there's around eighty-five years of experience. Mark is a Chartered Financial Planner and a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, so you have access to Chartered advice here. All verifiable on the FCA register.

III

Genuinely independent advice

Whole of market, owned by nobody but ourselves. A good number of our clients came to us after their previous adviser sold up to a consolidator and the fees went up. We have no intention of selling this firm to anybody, there is no pressure selling here and there are no sales targets.

Forces MoneyPlan

Free financial guidance for the armed forces.

Mark is a volunteer adviser with Forces MoneyPlan, a Personal Finance Society initiative offering free, confidential and impartial financial guidance to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

It is run through the PFS and delivered entirely by volunteer advisers. There is no charge to the person receiving the guidance and no fee to the adviser giving it. Mark advises both face to face and over Teams.

The scheme exists because service life creates financial questions that civilian advice is not always built for — the Armed Forces Pension Scheme, resettlement, medical discharge and the practical business of a career that may end at forty.

If you or a family member are serving or ex-forces, you can find out more at thepfs.org.

Also, in schools

My Personal Finance Skills

Mark is trained to deliver free financial education workshops in UK secondary schools for students aged 11 to 18 — managing everyday costs, spotting scams, understanding payslips and tax and the realities of credit and borrowing.

Why we mention it

Neither of these earns us anything

Both are given freely. We mention them because financial education is in short supply and giving it away is a reasonable use of a Saturday — and because it tells you something about how this firm thinks.

Accreditations

Standards somebody else holds us to.

Three of these are external. That is rather the point — a standard you set yourself is only worth what you say it is.

Consumer Duty Alliance

A member firm. The Alliance supports advisers in embedding the FCA’s Consumer Duty properly, rather than treating it as a form-filling exercise.

Chartered Financial Planner

The Chartered Insurance Institute’s benchmark of technical knowledge and professional standards.

Financial Vulnerability Taskforce

A public commitment to the Taskforce’s Charter on recognising and supporting vulnerable clients.

Pension Transfer Gold Standard

A voluntary code of good practice for firms advising on pension transfers.

Behind the advice

Who checks our work.

Being a small firm does not mean working without oversight. We pay for two external arrangements and we would rather you knew about both.

I

True Potential Adviser Services

We pay for the services of True Potential Adviser Services to provide a portal for our clients to view their documentation and obtain valuations, 24 hours a day.

II

The IFA Corporation

We also pay for specialised support from TIFAC, The IFA Corporation, specialising in compliance, audit and risk services to financial planning practices.

III

Neil, in-house

Alongside both, Neil Dombrowski is our Compliance, Audit and Risk Officer. Advice is checked here before it reaches you, not only afterwards.

Our services

Now you know who we are — here's what we do.

Advice for you and your family and for the business you've built.

Common questions

Things people ask before they ring.

Will I see the same adviser every time?

Yes, where possible. We will try to ensure that the adviser who initially sees you looks after you from then on.

What does "independent" actually mean?

It means we can recommend products from across the whole of the market, rather than from a list drawn up by a parent company or provider. We're owned by nobody but ourselves.

Restricted advisers — including some very large national firms — can only recommend from a limited range. Both are legitimate and both are regulated, but they are not the same thing and the difference matters most when it comes to cost.

How qualified are your advisers?

Mark is a Chartered Financial Planner and holds Fellowship of the Personal Finance Society, the highest qualification awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute. Paul holds the Diploma in Financial Planning and Daniel the Diploma in Financial Advice.

To be clear about one thing: Mark is Chartered, the firm is not. A firm can only call itself Chartered once at least half its advisers hold it and Daniel is still working towards his. So what we offer is access to Chartered financial advice, rather than a Chartered firm — and we would rather say that plainly than let the badge do work it hasn’t earned.

If the letters after an adviser's name mean nothing to you, that's entirely reasonable — we've written a plain-English guide to what they all mean.

Can I check you're properly regulated?

Please do and check any adviser you're considering. Our FCA firm reference number is 929372 and you'll find us on the FCA register. Here's how to check and why it matters.

Do you only work with people near Preston?

Most of our clients are in Lancashire and we're happy to visit at home, but we've looked after people who've moved away for decades. Video meetings work perfectly well once we know each other.

What happens at a first meeting?

Mostly listening. We'll ask what you're hoping for, what worries you and what you already have in place. There's no charge for that conversation and no obligation afterwards. If we don't think we can help, we'll say so.

Rather just talk to one of us?

Tell us when suits and an adviser will ring you back by the end of the next working day. No charge, no obligation.
